The LORD is good to those whose hope is in him, to the one who seeks him.
- Lamentations 3:25
The LORD is GOOD.
Everything about him is good. Everything he does is good. He's ALL GOOD. And, when we realize his great goodness, we start to desire him more than the good things he gives. I mean, there are a LOT of good things in this world, and he made them all. So, shouldn’t we seek them? Actually, no. See, those good things weren’t made to fill us up, make us happy, keep us going. They were made to reflect the goodness of the One who made them, to point our hearts to the Greater Good, our God. And, that my friends gets straight to the heart of our verse. It isn’t telling us to seek the good things that God will give us, it’s telling us to SEEK GOD. Totally different, right? Because when we are seeking God, we can be truly filled by him. We can understand his good plans for us, we can take a long view of our lives and be at peace, we can bask in the goodness of God himself. Then, all a sudden, the other things in life can come into right perspective. Understanding God’s goodness is a critical component of trusting him. We can trust him, because even in this fallen world where we experience hardship and trials, he promises to work all things together for the good of those who love him (Romans 8:28). Jesus tells us to seek God first, and then all the other good things will be added to us (Matt 6:25-34). So lets stop looking for good things and start looking to the Good Giver. He alone is able to meet our deepest longings... in himself.
