Come to me all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
- Matthew 11:28
We all need rest.
In fact, we can't live without it. We are made in such a way that resting is absolutely necessary. Think about it. God wove the concept of rest into the very fabric of our world. People and animals all need sleep, plants go dormant for a season, and every wakeful day is followed by a sleepy night. The message is apparent all around us: we need rest.
Do you feel it? I know I do. In a full-throttle season of extreme business, I feel my need for physical rest by the end of every day. But, more than that, I need mental rest, spiritual rest, and emotional rest. My day-end exhaustion should lead me to the One who is never weak or weary, the One who never runs out of steam. Jesus is always there, when I reach the end of my own strength, just waiting for me to acknowledge my need. He is always ready to give me strength in my weakness, peace in the middle of my chaos, and deep spiritual soul-filling when I'm all dried up.
This promise comes right out of the mouth of Jesus. He calls ALL of us who are weary and burdened to come to him. He is ready to give us rest in our most worn out spaces. We just have to come to him and tell him we need it.
He is so GOOD.
Are you listening to the rhythms of rest all around you, calling you to slow down and find peace?
What burdens do you need to give to Jesus?
When can you carve out a space for rest?
