I Betray My Beliefs
A Poem by Natalie Abbott

"Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” — James 1:27

Where is my heart?
It comes out of my mouth,
And out of my hands.
What do I say?
What do I do?
I betray my beliefs,
By each word, every act.

Where is my heart?
In the world,
In the world—
Loving status,
Wanting wants.
I betray my beliefs,
By each word, every act.

Where is your heart?
It comes out of your mouth,
And the holes in your hands.
Is it beating…for me?
Bleeding for me?
Reaching out,
That I might receive?

Where is my heart?
Make it yours.
Make it live.
Make it clean.
Make it love.
Let me live my belief,
By each word, every act.

Where is my heart?
In the world,
Now for you,
Loving the least,
Not the world and its things,
Let me live my belief,
By each word, every act.
