Jesus makes this bold claim about himself, “I am the light of the world.” What can that mean? Moreover, Jesus says that a person who follows him “will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.” These are not just your run of the mill moral teachings or claims about having some wisdom in the world. Jesus isn’t professing to be a really insightful life coach. Rather, he calls himself THE light of the world, the one and only. He contrasts Himself to all that is darkness and death in the world. And, he claims to grant life to any who would follow him. Wow. This is nothing short of calling himself God.
So dear friends, we are either looking at the mad ravings of a lunatic, or the true words of God himself. You see, a mere person simply cannot be THE light of THE world. A regular human simply cannot impart life to another. But, Jesus here is claiming just that awesome power in Himself. So, this month, we are going to dwell on who Jesus is. Many people love and respect his teachings. However, his claim here should make us pause and reflect upon how Jesus saw himself, who he really is.
How do you see Jesus?
Is it possible to be a good moral teacher and yet mistakenly think you are God?
If Jesus IS the light of the world and the life giver, how might that change you?
John 8:12
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
