Great Humility
A poem by Natalie Abbott

HE MUST BECOME GREATER; I MUST BECOME LESS. — JOHN 3:30

Great Humility

You are above, ruling it all.

I am beneath, my kingdom small.

You speak God’s words, wonders of heaven

—stretching far beyond perception.

Holding out brilliance, truth, and Spirit

Limited by no thing, extending beyond limit.

Yet, squinting in the light you’ve shown,

Though I am dim, I crave my own.

Still, you bled glory for my sake.

You’d take my folly in exchange.

Must I be less to gain it all?

To become great, become small?

If lofty you would stoop for me,

How could I not bend my knee?

So in my eyes you have increased,

And gladly now I must decrease.
