Does God Really Work All Things for Good?

The power of trusting this promise

By Vera Schmitz

“And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”  — Romans 8:28

Do I trust God?

Do I believe he is good?

When facing impossibly hard things, will I stand firm and cling to his promises?

I want to be the person who knows and believes that God is working even the most unbearable things for good.

As I consider these things, I’m reminded of a Tim Kelller quote has always followed me around,

"If we knew everything God knows, we would ask for exactly what he gives."

It’s incredibly provocative, isn’t it? It gives me great pause. Do I believe so deeply in the promise that God is good and that he’s working everything for my good that I would actually ask for the hard things that come my way? As much as I want this kind of faith, I’m not so sure I can say that yet. I guess I have some more wrestling to do.

This month’s verse is deep. It’s mysterious. It’s beautiful. It’s hopeful. And it requires great care. We’ll be working through it with you all month long. For now, if you want the big picture on how it’s even possible to say “And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose,”  Natalie’s teaching podcast is a fantastic place to start. Or maybe study along with us in our monthly Bible study if you aren't a member yet.

As always, it is our greatest honor and privilege to share the treasure of God’s Word with you. Thanks for letting us be a part of your walk with God.

Vera

P.s. One more banger of a quote: “Everything is necessary that he sends. Nothing can be necessary that he withholds.” — John Newton
